WordPress is the most widely used website platform in the world, an open-source content management system that runs a large share of the web, from small blogs to major publications. Its strengths are real: it is flexible, it has a plugin for almost anything, and its huge community means help is easy to find.

That flexibility is also its cost. A WordPress site is assembled from a theme and a stack of plugins, and each one needs updating, can conflict with another, and can open a security hole if it falls behind. Left unattended, a WordPress site tends to slow down and drift out of date, so it rewards steady maintenance in a way a simpler setup does not.

For many businesses WordPress is a sound, capable choice, especially where you need its ecosystem. I tend to build lean and custom instead, which trades WordPress’s plugin flexibility for less upkeep and more speed, part of the same template versus custom decision you would weigh with any page builder. Neither is wrong; they ask for different things from you after launch.
