The local pack, also called the map pack, is the boxed group of three nearby businesses, shown with a small map, that Google places at the top of most local search results. It sits above the ordinary blue links, so it is the first thing many people see.
For a small business, this box is prime real estate. When someone searches a service plus a town, or taps “near me,” the three businesses in the pack take most of the attention and most of the calls before a searcher ever scrolls to the regular results. Landing there is earned, not bought: it is driven by your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and how close and relevant you are to the person searching.
Your website is one of the signals behind it. Google reads your site to confirm what you do and where you work, and it can only match you to a “near me” search on details it can actually find in plain text. A clear, fast, readable site is a necessary part of the picture, not the whole of it. See local SEO for how the pieces fit together.
