AI search

AI search is when someone asks an AI assistant a question and it replies in its own words, built from websites it has read, instead of a list of links.

AI search is when someone asks an AI assistant a question and it replies in its own words, built from websites it has read, instead of handing back a list of links. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google’s AI answers all work this way.

This changes how customers find you. Instead of scanning ten blue links, a person asks “who is a good bookkeeper near me” and reads one composed reply. About 46% of people now read Google’s AI answer instead of clicking a link (Bain and Company, 2026). If your business is part of that answer, you are found. If the assistant cannot read your site, you are left out, and you never learn you were.

One honest note: no one can promise you a spot in an AI reply, and anyone who does is selling something. What you can do is make your site readable, so you are eligible. An assistant can only recommend a business it can actually read.

Making a site readable to assistants is its own small craft, covered by agent readiness, structured facts, and a clean text copy they can quote. I build every site with that groundwork in place. More on the shift in The Art of Being Found.
