Agent readiness is how easily AI assistants and agents can read, understand, and act on your website. Cloudflare measures it on a five-level ladder, from Level 1 (a basic web presence a person can view) up to Level 5 (a site built for software agents with their own tools). Most small businesses sit near the bottom without knowing it.
The levels reward specific, checkable things: welcoming AI crawlers by name, stating your rules with Content Signals, publishing a clean text copy with llms.txt and markdown negotiation, and labeling your facts with structured data. Very few sites do much of this: about 1 in 25 of the web’s 200,000 busiest sites even tells AI what it may do with their content (Cloudflare, 2026).
This matters to a small business because, as customers lean on AI search, a readable site is eligible to be part of the answer and an unreadable one is not. An assistant can only work with a business it can read.
