An answer engine is a search tool that hands back a written answer instead of a list of blue links. Ask it a question and it composes a reply in sentences, sometimes citing a few sources and sometimes not. Google’s AI Overviews and tools like Perplexity are the category, and it is a real shift away from the old page of ten links.
For a small business, the change is that the answer often sits in what people used to call position zero, above everything, and many searchers read it and never scroll. If your business is not part of what the engine drew from, you are absent from the answer a customer actually reads. The large language model writing that reply builds it from pages it read earlier.
So the work is making your pages ones the engine can read and quote cleanly, which is the aim of generative engine optimization. An engine can only include a business it can read, and being included is where any chance of an AI citation starts. Readable is the entry ticket, not a guarantee of the answer.
